Here, in most of my novels, you will find no real edgy conflict and change occurs mostly within the natural passage of time in the characters' lives. No larger than life heroes, heroines and with the exception of one (The adventures of a Super-Gendered-Challenged Woman!) no villains. Little romance, (unless you dismiss Seven Sisters and the up and coming, A moment's worth of Love (you gave me)) marginal violence and no adventures (at least of the type you or I are likely to encounter!) However, Executrix will change all that. People wish for a novel containing sex and terminal violence? Its coming.
Nevertheless, how boring so far! However, quantities of successful books and films have managed to bypass the critique of the professional without the recent trend (damn you Mr. Dickens!) of feverishly using simple psychological techniques to draw the masses in. My work is slow moving, possibly vapid concerning story-lines, choosing a bias of examination of personality over excitement (except for Alien Queens) and what seems to be the usual flavour; casuistically, prevaricating cliff-hangers accompanied by baseless uncomplimentary descriptions of sex.
Am I a victim of my time? I think I may have been popular about a hundred years ago! Except, only those Edwardian's of a most cosmopolitan and progressive nature would have understood my essentiality. In substance, inherently, my novels are about ordinary lives and caring about how others lead theirs. They are about relationships and personality, fainéant in nature mostly. Perhaps I disrespect myself? Perhaps. Nevertheless, I care to write no other way.
A friend recently urged me to write a Mills & Boon type of book and I said, yes, I could do that... after I phone around to my other friends to tell them that I am going to bludgeon myself to death...because that would be infinitely preferable to spending one second of my time on writing that type of modernistic, run-of-the-mill vanilla.
